Nicholas Pooran played for Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2025 Caribbean Premier League against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on Wednesday (20 Aug). Batting at No. 3 in a 168-run chase, the left handed wicket-keeper batsman managed just 10 runs from 14 balls.
Pooran was dismissed by out-of-favour West Indies all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall. In the 10 th over, on the first delivery, Pooran tried to play an aggressive shot to the ground but missed and Jewel Andrew completed the stumping. This was at a very critical stage of the game and this angered the TKR skipper.
The anger erupted and Pooran kept hitting the pitch with his bat in frustration. The video shared by CPL official X handle soon gained popularity as fans and cricket analysts reacted to it in large numbers. The reaction of Pooran was an indication of his passion, but it also created controversies regarding how to deal with pressure in the crucial moments.
In Trinbago Knight Riders, the former captain of West Indies Kieron Pollard scored the highest with 43 runs in 28 balls. TKR did not manage to exceed the total, so Pooran did not manage to win his team. Obed McCoy who bowled four overs and took four wickets conceding 39 runs was the top bowler of the team Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.
Further, one TKR batsman each was dismissed by Cornwall and Shakib Al Hasan. Earlier, Fabian Allen hit a brisk 45 off 20 balls, in a 69-run sixth-wicket partnership with captain Imad Wasim, who was not out on 39 off 27 balls. Their contribution saw Falcons make 167/6 in 20 overs.
On the bowling front, Usman Tariq and Nathan Edwards struck 2 wickets each on the TKR bowling front. Akeal Hosein and Mohammad Amir were also effective taking one wicket each of the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. The match also underscored the competitive advantage in the CPL where individual quality can prove to be the difference between a high scoring game.
The Trinbago Knight Riders began their 2025 CPL campaign with a 12-run win over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on August 17, and an outstanding 120 by an opening batsman Colin Munro. Next, Pooran led side will take on Saint Lucia Kings on Saturday (August 23) at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia.
The team will be tested in the next game against Saint Lucia Kings to show their strength, after the play by Pooran and loss. Fans will be keen to watch how the captain can direct his intensity towards performance. The initial phases of CPL 2025 will be competitive and players will have to perform regularly.
