At Least 11 Stabbed at Walmart in Michigan’s Traverse City, Suspect in Custody

At least 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, northern Michigan, on Saturday, The Associated Press reported, quoting local authorities. 

The Michigan State Police said the Traverse City Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and a suspect is now in custody. However, there was no immediate information available on the individual’s identity or motive.

“Details are limited,” the agency posted, urging residents to avoid the area while the scene remains active.

Outside the Walmart, a heavy emergency presence was visible. A fire truck, several police vehicles, and first responders were seen managing the aftermath.

All Victims Hospitalised

Al 11 injured were being treated for stab wounds, Megan Brown, spokesperson for Munson Healthcare, the region’s largest hospital, told the US-based news agency, but did not elaborate on their conditions. In a statement on social media, Munson said it would share more information “as appropriate.”

The incident reportedly took place just before 5 pm, when when police were notified of multiple stabbing victims inside the Walmart.

Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington told the Associated Press in an email that the company is “working with police and defer(s) questions to them right now.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said her office was closely monitoring the situation. “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence,” she said, per AP.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also confirmed that federal officials were on-site to “provide any necessary support.”

Meanwhile, authorities have asked the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues, citing safety and logistical concerns, per AP.

Traverse City, a scenic vacation town known for its cherry festivals, wineries, and the nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes, is located roughly 255 miles (410 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.
