At SCO Summit, UN Chief Makes Big Statement On China That May Provoke Trump

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has hailed China as a “fundamental pillar” of the global system. Speaking at the SCO Summit in Tianjin, Guterres stressed Beijing’s importance in safeguarding multilateralism amid rising global tensions. Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged full support to the UN, promising stability and cooperation in international affairs.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made a big comment on the role of China in shaping the new world order. Guterres, who is in Beijing for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, spoke about China’s importance in safeguarding multilateralism.

He stressed that Beijing’s backing is important for international bodies like UN at a time when global governance is being challenged by a US-led tariff war.  

“In this moment in which multilateralism is under fire, the support of China is an extremely important element to preserve,” Guterres told Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

He added, “we see new forms of policy that are sometimes difficult to understand, that sometimes look more like a show than serious diplomatic efforts, and in which business and politics seem sometimes also mixed.”

Guterres described China as a “fundamental pillar” of the international system.

“The role of the People’s Republic of China as a fundamental pillar of the multilateral system is extremely important and we are extremely appreciative and grateful for that,” he said.  

Xi Jinping Pledges Support To UN 

Responding to the UN chief, Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to the United Nations and global peace.

“China is willing to deepen cooperation with the United Nations, supports its central role in international affairs, and jointly shoulder its responsibilities in maintaining world peace and promoting development and prosperity,” Xi said.  

Xi said that China would remain a “reliable partner” of the UN and continue to provide “stability and certainty” in international affairs.

Both Xi and Guterres are attending the SCO Summit that is happening in Tianjin in the presence of world leaders like Modi and Putin.

This year’s SCO Summit is seen as a major display of Global South solidarity at a time of heightened geopolitical and economic tensions, as Trump has imposed tariffs on friendly countries like India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in China on Saturday after the relations between the two countries worsened. This is the first visit by Modi to China in more than seven years. He is expected to hold bilateral talks with Xi Jinping as the two countries are engaged in normalizing strained India-China relations.
