Stock Market Holiday on January 15, 2026: NSE & BSE Closed
The Indian stock market will be closed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to the local body elections in Maharashtra. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) have both clarified that there will be a trading holiday, eliminating any previous misunderstandings.
Initially, the exchanges issued mixed signals, which left investors uncertain about whether trading would continue. However, the NSE has now clearly stated that all key market segments will remain closed for the day. The BSE has also announced a complete shutdown across equity and derivatives segments.
With no trading activity scheduled, investors are advised to plan their strategies accordingly and factor the holiday into settlement timelines and overall market planning.
Earlier, the NSE had indicated that trading would continue on January 15, which led to confusion among investors and market participants. The exchange has now issued a clarification, confirming the closure.
In a notification, the NSE stated:
“Thursday, January 15, 2026, shall be a trading holiday for the debt segment on account of Municipal Corporation Elections in Maharashtra.”

The Maharashtra civic body elections have been scheduled for January 15, 2026, with results to be announced the following day. The political contest is enormous: 29 civic bodies, including the highly competitive Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 2,869 seats across 893 wards, and nearly 16,000 candidates vying for power.
The real attraction of this election lies in its political backdrop. The BMC polls will serve as a litmus test for Maharashtra’s new political landscape, reshaped by dramatic splits in the Shiv Sena and NCP. Adding to the intrigue, erstwhile rivals Raj Thackeray’s MNS and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) are joining forces for the first time, making this municipal election less about potholes and more about power.
