India on August 20, 2025, Wednesday successfully test-fired the Agni 5 intermediate range ballistic missile. According to a brief statement made by the Defence ministry, “Intermediate range ballistic missile ‘Agni 5’ was successfully test-fired from the integrated test range, Chandipur in Odisha on August 20. The launch validated all operational and technical parameters. It was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command.” With the launch of the Agni 5 intermediate range ballistic missile, India has demonstrated its strategic military capabilities. 

What are the key features of the Agni 5 Ballistic Missile?

There is a three-stage solid-fuelled engine in the surface-to-surface Agni-V missile. This missile can also strike targets up to 5,000 kilometres away with a high degree of accuracy. Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has designed and developed this missile. Agni-V is a canister-launched system transported by truck and is viewed as a deterrent against China with its range, as reported in The New Indian Express. 

What do we know about the Agni 1 to 4 missiles

The Agni 1 to 4 missiles have already been deployed. The development of the Agni missile series commenced in early 1980 as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program led by former late President APJ Abdul Kalam. Since then, India has developed many versions of the Agni missile series. 
Agni 1 missile- The development of this missile started in 1999 and its first successful test launch was held in 2003. 

Agni II missile- The first test-firing of the prototype of this missile was conducted in 1999.

Agni III missile- The first successful flight test of Agni 3 missile was done in 2007. 

Agni IV missile- Previously known as the Agni II prime, Agni IV missile was first tested in 2011. 

The Agni Missile Series has strengthened India’s position in the technological, scientific, security and at the international level as well.
