Did Former VP Jagdeep Dhankhar Apply For MLA Pension After Resignation? What We Know?

The former Vice-President India Jagdeep Dhankhar has applied for a pension in the capacity of a former legislator in Rajasthan, officials said, as reported in the PTI.

The former Vice-President India Jagdeep Dhankhar has applied for a pension in the capacity of a former legislator in Rajasthan, officials said. The former Vice President of India has represented the Kishangarh Assembly constituency as a Congress MLA from 1993 to 1998. Mr Dhankhar received a pension as a former legislator until July 2019. However, the pension was discontinued after he was appointed the governor of West Bengal. For a former MLA in Rajasthan, the pension starts at Rs 35,000 per month for a single term. It then increases with additional terms and age as reported in the PTI. 

When did Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the Vice President of India position?

Jagdeep Dhankhar has submitted his resignation from the Vice President of India position on July 21, 2025. Mr Dhankhar had cited medical advice and health reasons for his resignation. Mr Dhankhar had assumed the Vice President office in August 2022 after he has won the Vice-Presidential election. He had sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday, July 21 and invoked Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution. For those who don’t know, this article has provision for the resignation of the Vice President. 

Jagdeep Dhankhar’s birthplace and initial jobs

Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951 in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district’s Kithana village. Mr Dhankhar had finished his initial years in school education from the Government Primary School at Kithana village. Post the completion of the primary school education, Mr Dhankhar studied at the Government Middle School, Ghardhana and the Sainik School, Chittorgarh. After the completion of the school education, Mr Dhankhar joined the Maharaja’s College, Jaipur. He then pursued his graduation in B.Sc. (Honors) Physics. He also completed his degree in Law from the University of Rajasthan.

What do we know about Jagdeep Dhankhar’s career in law?

Mr Dhankhar had his beginnings in the legal profession after finishing his education. He had a long legal stint at the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court. Jagdeep Dhankhar was the senior-most designated Senior Advocate of the State and continued with this post till his appointment as the West Bengal Governor on July 30, 2019.
