Assam’s Nagaon district has been jolted by 4.3 magnitude earthquake and the tremors have been felt in Tezpur. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) has informed this update with a social media post on X. According to the NCS, “The earthquake, recorded around 40 kilometres away from Tezpur, had a depth of 35 kilometres and was felt at around 12.09 PM today. NCS is the nodal agency of the Government of India who has been assigned the task for monitoring of earthquake activity. NCS also conducts seismological research in the country and is an attached office of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MOES). The earthquake activity all across the country is monitored by NCS through its 24×7 round-the-clock monitoring center. It is done for better understanding of earthquake source processes and also their impact on the cause of earthquake-safe society.
It consists of various divisions:
NSN, or the National Seismological Network is operated and maintained by NCS.. The NSN comprises 153 seismological observatories spread across India. NSN has the capabilities to record earthquakes and events of magnitude (M)≥2.5 in and around Delhi, M≥3.0 for the North East (NE) region, M≥3.5 in the peninsular and extra-peninsular areas, and M≥4.0 in border regions.
