Oil prices extended gains on Monday as efforts to end the Iran war appeared to have stalled, after a nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates came under attack and as U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to discuss military options on Iran.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 climbed $1.65, or 1.51%, to $110.91 a barrel by 0703 GMT, but were off the $112 they had touched earlier for their highest since May 5.

Laying bare a deepening diplomatic gridlock, Iranian media said on Sunday that the United States had failed to make any concrete concessions in its latest response to Iran’s proposed agenda for negotiations to end the war.
Dismantling the specifics of Washington’s diplomatic framework, the Fars news agency said Washington had presented a five-point list, which included a demand for Iran to keep only one nuclear site in operation and transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the United States.

 Indian markets opened in the red as benchmark equity indices registered sharp losses during the opening bell following weak global cues. The BSE SENSEX stood at 74,347.68 points, down 890.31 points or 1.18 per cent. The NSE NIFTY 50 stood at 23,414.20 points, losing 229.30 points or 0.97 per cent.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the deadlocked Iran-US negotiations and broader regional developments during talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Tehran also confirmed that Araghchi separately engaged with French officials on diplomatic efforts and the growing tensions in the Gulf region.

Meanwhile, Türkiye is reportedly working behind the scenes to support efforts aimed at easing the conflict, while simultaneously increasing security measures along its border with Iran amid concerns over a potential refugee influx.

Israeli media outlets reported that the country’s military has entered a heightened state of readiness amid fears of renewed confrontation with Iran and the possibility of another round of US military intervention.

According to public broadcaster Kan, which cited an unnamed security source, Israel could participate in any future American-led strikes and may also consider targeting Iran’s energy facilities. The report surfaced shortly after a more than 30-minute phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday.

India on Monday condemned the drone attack targeting the Barakah nuclear facility in the UAE, terming it as a “dangerous escalation”, calling for restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

“India is deeply concerned at the attack targeting the Barakah nuclear facility in the UAE. Such actions are unacceptable and represent a dangerous escalation. We urgently call for restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomacy,” The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday that its forces intercepted and brought down three drones that had crossed into the Kingdom’s territory from Iraqi airspace.

In a statement, the Saudi defence ministry said authorities were prepared to take all necessary operational steps against any actions threatening the country’s sovereignty and national security.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday denounced what it called an “unprovoked terrorist attack” targeting an electricity generator located outside the secured inner zone of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region.

Officials said the drone involved in the incident entered UAE airspace from the western border area. Authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported and that radiation levels at the facility remained completely safe.

Gold prices fell on Monday to their lowest point in more than a month, as Middle East tensions pushed oil prices higher, fuelling inflation fears and reinforcing expectations of higher-for-longer interest rates.

Spot gold <XAU=> was down 1.1% at $4,488.99 per ounce, as of 0052 GMT, hitting its lowest level since March 30. 

U.S. gold futures <GCcv1> for June delivery lost 1.5% to $4,493.30.

*Gold was pressured by rising geopolitical tensions after a drone strike caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, lifting crude prices and bets of interest rates.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei shared a scene from the 2024 biographical film The Apprentice, taking an indirect jab at US President Donald Trump.

The clip featured Roy Cohn,  portrayed in the film as Trump’s mentor, describing what he called the “rules for winning,” including always claiming victory, never admitting defeat, and being prepared to go to any extent against opponents.
