Putin India Visit LIVE Updates: Russian President Vladimir Putin is arriving in India for a two-day visit starting Thursday, December 4, 2025, to attend the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit on the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks his first trip to the country in four years.
The agenda for the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi high-level talks is likely to centre on strengthening defence cooperation, safeguarding bilateral trade from external challenges, and discussing potential collaboration on small modular nuclear reactors.

Russia’s state-run nuclear corporation has said it has delivered the first consignment of nuclear fuel for initial loading of the third reactor at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India carries particular importance, as it coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-Russia strategic partnership, which began during Putin’s first year as president. Since 2000, both countries have followed a practice of annual bilateral summits, with Indian leaders visiting Moscow one year and the Russian president returning to New Delhi the next.
This annual rhythm faced disruption in 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. PM Modi was scheduled to visit Russia for that year’s summit, but it was postponed. In 2023, Putin did not attend the G20 summit in New Delhi, partly due to an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant linked to the Ukraine conflict.
The summit cycle resumed in 2024 when PM Modi visited Russia, with Putin reciprocating the visit four years later. This year, his India visit coincides with trade discussions between India and the US, aiming to reduce punitive tariffs imposed during the Trump administration over India’s purchases of Russian oil.
Moscow has long been India’s largest defense supplier and has expressed interest in increasing imports of Indian goods to expand bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030. So far, trade has been heavily weighted toward Russia, primarily due to India’s energy imports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday for high-level talks aimed at boosting bilateral ties and expanding trade cooperation.
Yaroslav Lissovolik, Founder of BRICS+ Analytics and a member of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), says the India-Russia partnership continues to move in a positive direction. He states that the progress is visible both in recent data and in the atmosphere surrounding the summit. According to him, the two nations share a long history of effective economic cooperation, and the partnership keeps growing despite global shifts. He adds that this summit may serve as another key moment for new steps and initiatives that can strengthen the relationship not only for both countries but also for the Global South and BRICS. He notes that the ties between India and Russia have consistently advanced in a constructive manner.
Speaking on India-Russia trade ties, Yaroslav Lissovolik, Founder of BRICS+ Analytics and member of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), said that both nations need to tap the full potential of their trade relationship, as several opportunities remain underutilised. He noted that India had highlighted the issue of trade imbalance earlier at a BRICS meeting, adding that this imbalance is not limited to Russia but extends to other BRICS economies as well. Lissovolik said the way forward could involve steps such as wider trade liberalisation and expanding the presence of Indian products in BRICS markets. He pointed out that India already has strong export sectors, and additional scope exists in services, including IT and AI-related fields. He shared that the Russian President has signalled interest in deeper cooperation in AI, an area where both countries have highly skilled talent. According to him, collaboration in such high-value sectors could help bridge existing trade gaps. He also emphasised that overall trade volumes remain low and that both sides have significant room to expand and explore new avenues of partnership.

The Modi-Putin bond has seen several special moments over the years. In 2020, during Russia’s Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, PM Modi described their relationship as having “special chemistry” and “special ease.” He recalled how even their shared concern for wildlife, like tiger conservation and the Siberian cranes migrating to Gujarat, reflected the depth of their connection.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India has drawn strong attention from industry leaders, who believe the trip could mark a new chapter in trade relations between the two nations. Industry experts say the discussions are focused on boosting bilateral trade, balancing imports and exports, and identifying new areas of cooperation in technology and industry.
Ajay Sahai, Director General and CEO of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), said India’s trade with Russia remains uneven but is showing signs of improvement. “If we look at India’s trade, last year we imported approximately USD 63 billion from Russia. Our exports are USD 5 billion. As the minister said, this trade is slightly skewed, so we need to balance it and diversify it,” he said, while speaking to ANI. Sahai added that efforts are now being made to introduce new sectors to strengthen India’s export base and reduce dependence on a few key commodities.
Considered one of the most heavily protected leaders globally, Vladimir Putin is known to travel with two key symbols of power and security, his custom Ilyushin IL-96-300PU presidential jet, famously dubbed the “Flying Kremlin,” and his armoured Aurus Senat limousine. He further added, “We should have the sovereign autonomy to actually decide the terms of our own engagement with each country. And it’s in that spirit, I believe that we have maintained good relations with Russia, with America and with China. At different times, there are different emphases. So, there will probably be a discussion of new mechanisms or the recalibration of supply chains.”
