ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, has posted two job openings in India even though the app has been banned in the country for more than five years. The listings appeared on LinkedIn for positions based in Gurgaon.

TikTok was banned in June 2020 along with 58 other Chinese apps. The move came after violent clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020. The ban was announced under the Ministry of Information and Technology, which stated that the apps were “misusing” data and sending it to servers outside India without permission.

The two jobs advertised by ByteDance are in the Trust and Safety department. One is for a Content Moderator (Bengali Speaker), which requires fluency in English and Bengali, along with the ability to manage sensitive and policy-violating content. The other is a Wellbeing Partnership and Operations Lead, which requires over five years of project management experience and involves handling wellness programs, stakeholder communication, and vendor compliance. The role also involves up to 30% travel.

These listings come at a time when India and China are showing signs of improving relations after years of strained ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin.

As of August 2025, TikTok remains banned in India, and the app is not available on either the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

The job openings suggest that ByteDance is rebuilding its presence in India, even though there is no official confirmation of a TikTok return.
