H-1B Fuels Your U.S. Dreams – But Things Could Change Radically Under Donald Trump: Here’s What We Know

The H-1B visa program, under scrutiny by Trump-era policies and MAGA activists, has left skilled immigrants like Google engineer Surbhi Madan in constant uncertainty. Despite career success, she fears losing her stay over small mistakes, avoids long commitments, and faces stigmas as a “worker” not a “resident.”

The controversy linked to H-1B visa program has kept growing continuously in the past few years. Donald Trump’s government has reportedly expressed willingness to change some sections of it while activists of the MAGA movement have sought either stricter rules or complete removal of the program.

This confusion has left many skilled workers, currently living in the US, in limbo. One such worker is Surbhi Madan, an Indian national who has been working in the US for over a decade. The 30-year-old works for Google as a software engineer and noted Trump’s policies could cut short her stay in the US.

U.S. Stay Uncertain? Everyday Fears of an H-1B Worker

Madan first arrived in 2013 to study computer science at Brown University. She secured her H-1B visa in 2017 on her first attempt at the lottery. At the time, she said, the job market looked more favorable for international graduates.

“The one-third chance of being selected has not changed since I applied, but companies were hiring more actively then. I feel lucky compared to recent graduates,” she told Business Insider.

Despite the opportunity the visa has provided, Madan described it as a system that leaves her future unsettled. She said the risk of losing her visa makes her anxious even about minor mistakes, such as while driving or filing taxes.

H-1B Workers Grapple With Uncomfortable Situations

That insecurity also shapes her personal decisions. She avoids signing long-term leases for housing, choosing one-year options instead. “I never know how long I’ll be allowed to stay,” she said.

Madan added that legal immigrants often face uncomfortable perceptions. She recalled an interaction with an immigration officer on her return from overseas travel. When asked about the purpose of her visit, she replied that she lived in the U.S. The officer responded: “You don’t live here; you work here.”

Her experience reflects the broader debate surrounding the H-1B program, which provides opportunities for skilled foreign workers but also leaves many with an ongoing sense of instability.
