Nine countries in the world are known to have nuclear weapons, with the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom being the first to openly declare their nuclear capabilities. These five nations are officially recognised as nuclear-weapon states under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT).
India and Pakistan, both outside the NPT framework, have built their nuclear programs over the years and now hold significant stockpiles.
According to the latest report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia and the United States remain the world’s top nuclear powers. Russia leads with over 5,400 nuclear warheads, followed closely by the United States with 5,100. Together, they hold nearly 90 per cent of the global nuclear arsenal.
SIPRI reports that both countries are not only maintaining but also modernising their nuclear forces.
China is also expanding its nuclear arsenal. The report highlights that China raised its stockpile from 500 to around 600 warheads in 2024.
Meanwhile, India and Pakistan continue their long-standing nuclear rivalry. India has an estimated 180 nuclear warheads, slightly more than Pakistan’s 170.
Israel, despite never officially admitting to having nuclear weapons, is believed to possess about 90 warheads. This puts it ahead of countries like North Korea but still far below global powers like the US, Russia, and China.
Interestingly, Iran does not appear on SIPRI’s confirmed list of nuclear-armed nations. The think tank has not verified that Tehran possesses any warheads.
SIPRI suggests that while international treaties aim to reduce nuclear risks, the modernisation of nuclear arsenals worldwide show that the global threat remains far from diminishing.
