IndiGo has named former British Airways chief William “Willie” Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer. The announcement comes after Pieter Elbers stepped down earlier this month following operational challenges faced by the airline last year.

The appointment will take effect after regulatory approvals, with Walsh expected to join by August 2026.

In an official statement, IndiGo said the decision was approved by the board, marking a key leadership change at a crucial time for the airline.

William Walsh On His Appointment

Reacting to his new role, Walsh said he was pleased to lead IndiGo and praised the airline’s strong foundation and reputation. He highlighted the team’s commitment and professionalism, noting that IndiGo is well-positioned to navigate the evolving aviation sector. He added that his focus will be on building a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration.

IndiGo’s Managing Director Rahul Bhatia also welcomed the appointment, calling Walsh a seasoned aviation leader with global experience and strong operational expertise.

Exit Of Pieter Elbers

Walsh replaces Pieter Elbers, who resigned on March 10, shortly after a major disruption in IndiGo’s domestic operations that left several passengers stranded. Following Elbers’ exit, Rahul Bhatia stepped in as interim CEO to oversee operations.

A Veteran With Decades Of Experience

William Walsh brings over four decades of experience in the aviation industry. He began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979 and later held key leadership roles, including serving as CEO of Aer Lingus from 2001 to 2005.

He went on to lead British Airways as CEO from 2005 to 2011, steering the airline through the global financial crisis. Walsh then became the founding CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns major airlines such as British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Level, and Vueling, serving in that role until 2020.

Since 2021, he has been the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), where he has represented global airline interests on regulation, sustainability, and industry recovery.
