The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections will feature a major political battle between Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari in an attempt to determine who will fill the Bhabanipur seat. Adhikari has already declared that he will not only run from Nandigram, where he defeated Banerjee in 2011, but also from Bhabanipur (considered by many as Banerjee’s traditional stronghold).
The BJP’s announcement of Adhikari’s candidacy at Bhabanipur represents a bold and aggressive strategy that is intended to put Adhikari directly against Banerjee in the current election and demonstrate that they can win in Banerjee’s home district. This election contest has been labelled by certain BJP leaders as not only the most significant battle but also the most crucial.
Ultimately, the intensity of this electoral contest will be higher as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has now also released its list of candidates for 291 out of 294 available Assembly seats, which indicates TMC’s willingness and ability to compete across the state. TMC’s announcement demonstrates their confidence and desire to remain in power for an additional four years.
The contest in Bhabanipur is extremely important in the context of a long history of political influence in the area. Banerjee first represented Bhabanipur in the Assembly since 2011, having been re-elected from here to the Assembly in the recent 2021 election. Adhikari was a close aide of Banerjee before he switched to being a member of the BJP. He had beaten Banerjee in the Nandigram contest in a very close election, making this contest both more personal and more significant than simply winning an election for either of them.
The BJP’s first candidate list shows a combination of experienced candidates and new candidates, as they intend to increase their presence in the state. Along with Adhikari, many prominent leaders have also been nominated in significant districts to help implement their overall strategy to overcome the incumbent TMC.
On the other side, the TMC’s candidate announcement also shows how detailed their plan is, with candidates having been nominated in almost all of the Assembly districts, solidifying Banerjee’s role at the head of their campaign.
Political analysts believe the contest between Banerjee and Adhikari in Bhabanipur will be the key contest in the election, with national attention focusing on that race. With both parties releasing their candidate slates and publicly refining their campaign strategies, the stage is now set for a major campaign in West Bengal.
