Leh Police arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday, just before he was scheduled to address a press conference at 2:30 pm. His arrest came two days after protests in Ladakh demanding inclusion under the Sixth Schedule turned violent. Security forces moved quickly to prevent him from speaking to the media as tensions remained high across the region.
According to the NewsX sources, Sonam Wangchuk likely to be taken to outside ladakh after he is arrested.
Sonam Wangchuk has been leading demonstrations demanding full statehood for Ladakh and recognition of the Union Territory under the Sixth Schedule. Protesters have called for stronger safeguards for tribal rights and protection of land, jobs, and culture. On Wednesday, the agitation escalated into violence, leaving four people dead and several others injured in Leh.
Following Wangchuk’s arrest, authorities suspended internet services in Leh to curb the spread of rumors and maintain law and order. Police and security forces have been deployed in large numbers to control further unrest. The situation in Ladakh remains tense, as people continue to press for constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule.
