The world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity located in Gujarat, and other incredibly large sculptures, such as the 108 ft tall statue of Kempe Gowda at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, were among the works of internationally acclaimed sculptor Ram Sutar who died on Wednesday night.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his sympathies for the loss of renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, who was responsible for creating several of India’s famous monuments, such as the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. Ram Vanji Sutar, a well-known sculptor, died on Thursday at his home in Noida. According to Noida Police, he was 100 years old and had been experiencing age-related diseases.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ram Sutar Ji, a remarkable sculptor whose mastery gave India some of its most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Unity in Kevadia,” PM Modi wrote in a post on X. His creations will always be regarded as potent representations of India’s culture, history, and spirit. He has immortalised national pride for generations to come. His works will keep inspiring artists and citizens alike. My heartfelt condolences to his family, admirers and all who were touched by his remarkable life and work. Om Shanti.”
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief on X: “The demise of the great sculptor, the artisan of the world’s tallest statue ‘Statue of Unity’, ‘Padma Bhushan’ Shri Ram V. Sutar Ji, is extremely sorrowful and an irreplaceable loss to the art world. A humble tribute to him! I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed noble soul attains eternal peace and grants strength to the grieving family to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!” Sutar is famous for designing the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue that stands 182 metres. Ram V. Sutar received a gold medal from Bombay’s J.J. School of Art. Sutar is well-known around the world for his realistic sculptures and mastery in bronze. More than 450 towns around the world have his bust of Mahatma Gandhi. Artists are drawn to Sutar’s workshop by his works, which have received praise from all around the world. He is frequently likened to masters such as Michelangelo and Rodin.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is honoured by the 522-foot Statue of Unity. Other noteworthy projects that Sutar worked on included the 400-foot Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue in Mumbai and the 600-foot Lord Ram Statue in Ayodhya.
