South Africa defeated New Zealand to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. The Proteas started on a brilliant note with the ball in hand in the first innings to restrict the hosts to a score of only 91 runs. Debutant Nqobani Mokoena picked up three wickets before Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman picked up a couple of wickets each in their opening spells.

In reply, the Kiwis bowled well to stretch the game to the 17th over. However, Connor Esterhuizen, playing his first international match, remained not out while opening the innings and made 45 runs in 48 balls in a tricky chase for the visitors. For New Zealand, their skipper, Mitchell Santner, bowled with extreme control, giving away only eight runs in his four overs.

On a pitch where stroke-making was difficult, New Zealand would believe they were short of 15-20 runs as they lost by seven wickets in the opening game of the series.

South African Bowlers Start Strongly

Having been asked to bowl, the South African bowlers started strongly in their opening spells. Both Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman were right on the money in their opening spells as they picked up two wickets each in the power play itself.

New Zealand had lost half of their side in the first six overs itself, with Bevon Jacobs running himself out in search of a needless single.

Debutant Nqobani Mokoena, playing his first international match, got among the wickets as well. The right-arm pacer picked up three wickets, dismissing James Neesham, Zavhary Foulkes, and Cole McConchie. He was named the player of the match for his bowling efforts in the first innings. Six of the New Zealand batters were dismissed for single-digit scores, with Neesham top-scoring with 26 runs. Skipper Keshav Maharaj picked up a couple of wickets as the Kiwis were bowled out for 91 runs.

A Nervy Chase For South Africa

It should have been an easy chase for the South African batting unit; however, the pitch played its tricks to make life difficult for the visitors. Run-scoring was difficult at the Bay Oval as New Zealand spinners bowled with controlled lines and lengths. Their skipper, Mitchell Santner, picked up a solitary wicket and gave away only eight runs in his four overs.

Connor Esterhuizen Scores Big

For South Africa, it was a tale of their two debutants. After the impressive performance from Nqobani Mokoena in the first innings, Connor Esterhuizen scored big while opening the innings. The wicketkeeper batter remained unbeaten, scoring 45 runs in 48 deliveries to chase down the target. He finished the innings with a six.
