War clouds are gathering once again over West Asia. With no final deal between Iran and the US, speculations are growing over a potential military action by Washington against Tehran. According to reports, several officials from the US military and intelligence community reportedly cancelled their Memorial Day weekend plans, CBS News reported. Trump himself had originally planned to spend the holiday weekend at his golf property in New Jersey. However, the report said he is now expected to return to the White House instead. The US President also stated on Friday (US times) that he would miss the wedding of his son, Donald Trump Jr., csaying he has to deal with a ‘thing’ called Iran. Trump publicly said he would not travel for the wedding due to “circumstances related to government” and his “love for the United States of America.”
“It’s important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, reports citing Flightradar data claimed that Iran has closed its airspace, further signalling that the military action may resume between the two countries. Reports say that Tehran has closed the airspace till Monday, most likely due to Trump’s decison of attacking on weekends. Civil Aviation Authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued the notice to airmen late on Friday.
While discussions over possible strikes continue, diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war were also underway. Pakistan, which is mediating between the United States and Iran, dispatched its army chief to Tehran in an effort to help secure a deal, according to reports. CBS News quoted White House spokesperson Anna Kelly as saying, “The President has been clear about the consequences if Iran fails to make a deal.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told António Guterres that Washington’s “excessive demands” remain the main obstacle to ongoing peace negotiations, according to Al Jazeera.
During a telephone conversation with Guterres, Araghchi said the United States had repeatedly undermined diplomatic efforts through “broken promises, contradictory positions, and military aggression.” Despite those concerns, he added that Iran continues to engage in truce talks.
Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday as diplomatic activity surrounding the conflict gathered momentum. The visit came as Iran reviewed the latest peace proposal while US media outlets continued reporting that Washington was considering fresh military strikes against the Islamic republic. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei cautioned against reading too much into the diplomatic engagement.
According to Iran’s ISNA news agency, Baqaei said the visit did not mean “we have reached a turning point or a decisive situation,” adding that “deep and extensive” disagreements still remain.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is visiting India, expressed hope that negotiations could eventually help end the war, which began on February 28 following US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Trump had said on Wednesday that he was prepared to give Tehran “a couple of days” to respond to the latest US proposal. He also noted that his administration was “pretty impressed” by Iran’s negotiators, while warning that Washington would require strong assurances to ensure the conflict does not reignite.
