Missiles and drones flying from the direction of Iran fell on the territory of the airport in the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan on Thursday, a source close to the Azerbaijani government told Reuters. A fire reportedly broke out following the incident, the source said, adding that an official statement would be issued soon. It was not immediately clear how many missiles or drones landed in the area.

Video footage shared by the source showed black smoke rising near the terminal of Nakhchivan International Airport, located about 10 km (6 miles) from the Iranian border.

Drone Strikes Hit Airport, Area Near School

Later, Azerbaijan strongly condemned the strikes, saying drones launched from Iranian territory had targeted the Nakhchivan region, damaging infrastructure and injuring civilians.

In a statement, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said the attack occurred around midday on March 5 when drones entered the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Officials said one drone struck infrastructure at Nakhchivan International Airport, damaging the terminal building, while another fell near a school in the village of Shakarabad. Two civilians were injured in the incident, authorities added.

Azerbaijan Calls Attack Violation Of International Law

Condemning the strikes, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said the attack violated international law and heightened tensions in the region.

Officials described the launch of drones from Iranian territory as a serious breach of sovereignty and urged Tehran to provide a clear explanation. The ministry also called on Iran to conduct an investigation and take urgent steps to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
