One person has been taken into custody after several windows were damaged at the Ohio residence of US Vice President JD Vance, triggering a federal investigation, CNN reported on Monday citing a law enforcement source. Authorities said the incident occurred shortly after midnight, and preliminary information indicates that the Vance family was not at home at the time. Investigators also believe the suspect did not enter the residence, though the exact cause of the damage remains unclear.
Several Images that were circulated by the local media showed multiple broken windows at the property. Federal officials said they are still assessing whether the incident was random vandalism or specifically targeted at Vice President Vance or his family. “It remains unclear what exactly caused the damage at this stage,” the source told CNN, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
Taylor Van Kirk, Vance’s press secretary said that the family was in D.C. during the incident. U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi gave details about the incident saying that, “An adult male was taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department after being detained by U.S. Secret Service personnel for causing property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with the Vice President,”
He further added that “the man was detained shortly after midnight. The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as charging decisions are reviewed.”
The incident comes amid elevated security concerns surrounding senior US leadership, particularly following a major international operation involving the capture of deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Against this backdrop, Vice President Vance was notably absent from President Donald Trump’s news conference announcing Maduro’s capture, despite being closely involved in planning and execution of the operation.
President Trump addressed the media hours after Maduro was taken into US custody on Saturday, standing alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, according to Fox News. While Vance publicly praised the operation on social media, he did not attend the briefing.
Officials said Vance had met Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Friday to discuss the operation but was absent later that night when senior officials monitored the mission from Trump’s golf club. According to Fox News, the national security team was concerned that a late-night motorcade movement by the Vice President could alert Venezuelan authorities during the operation.
Despite not being physically present, Vance remained actively involved. A spokesperson said, “The Vice President joined by secure video conference throughout the night to monitor the operation.” He later returned to Cincinnati after the mission concluded.
Citing “increased security concerns,” the spokesperson added that Trump and Vance are now limiting the frequency and duration of time spent together outside the White House, reflecting broader precautions around top officials.
