Kathy Ruemmler, top lawyer at Goldman Sachs, a former White House counsel under Barack Obama, has resigned after emails showed she had a close personal relationship with the discredited financier, Jeffrey Epstein. Ruumler announced her resignation as chief legal officer and general counsel on Thursday (she will do so on June 30, 2026). Until recently, she had not given in to demands to resign, and had tried to disidentify herself with the correspondence, saying that she had nothing to hide, even as the calls to do so increased with the increasing scrutiny of the nature of her relationship with Epstein.

The recently released emails indicate that on several occasions, Ruemmler called Epstein Uncle Jeffrey and was affectionate of him, which is quite a contrast to her future open remarks, where she identified him as a monster. The communications can be dated back to the time following the conviction of Epstein on sex crimes and his designation as a sex offender in 2008. Before leaving the White House in 2014, in her private legal practice, Ruemmler received a number of costly gifts including luxury handbags and a fur coat sent by Epstein, according to reports. She once (2018) wrote ‘So beautiful and considerate! Thank you to Uncle Jeffrey!!!’ These dealings have cast some grave questions bearing in mind the strict regulations of the Wall Street that do not allow the accepting of high value gifts on the ground of conflict of interest and anti-bribery laws.

Her resignation was accepted by Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, who had earlier complimented Ruemmler as an excellent lawyer and with whom he had no reservations regarding her leadership of the firm. According to the law enforcement records, it is also mentioned that on the day of his arrest in July 2019, Epstein tried to call Ruemmler and FBI records showed him panicking over the charges he was facing. Records also indicated that Ruemmler remained in contact with Epstein between 2014 and 2019, telling him how to answer questions in the press about his legal career. Ruemmler, in an earlier conversation with Reuters this month, added that she represented Jeffrey Epstein when she was a defense lawyer, as the scandal that surrounds her previous relationship eventually cost her a job at Goldman Sachs.
