India is celebrating the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and the much-awaited Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, begins on Saturday. More than 20 crore national flags have been made available since the launch of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, according to cultural ministry officials on Friday.
On July 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to support the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ movement by raising or displaying the national flag in their houses between August 13 – 15. Besides the use of polyester, the government has changed the country’s flag code to allow the tricolor to fly both day and night and to be machine-made.
The ministry has also suggested to people, via the campaign’s website, proper ways to display a flag at their houses, as well as urging them to take a photo with ‘Tiranga’ or pin location a flag near them on the internet.
On July 31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ was turning into a popular movement and urged people to put ‘Tiranga’ as their profile picture on social media between August 2 and 15.
Militant Hindutva leader Yati Narsinghanand Giri has appealed to Hindus to have a saffron-colored flag on their house and boycott the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. According to media reports, Narsinghanand has asked Hindus to boycott the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign and not purchase flags as he claimed that the Muslims have received the biggest order of procuring flags for this campaign.
