In a heart-wrenching incident ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, two people lost their lives and another was seriously injured while transporting a massive Ganesh idol in Hyderabad. The mishap occurred under the Bandlaguda police station limits on Monday late night, sending shockwaves through the festive community.
According to police reports, a 22-foot Ganesh idol was being shifted from Laxmiguda near Jalpalli to Puranapul in the Chandrapuri area for installation. The organizers were escorting the idol-laden vehicle when tragedy struck.
Two individuals, identified as Toli and Vikas, died on the spot, while another man sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the victims may have come in contact with a high-tension electric wire during transportation, leading to electrocution. However, officials clarified that the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination (PME).
A police official from Bandlaguda station stated, “The incident occurred when the idol was being taken to Puranapul. Two members of the organizing committee tragically lost their lives, and one more was injured. We suspect electrocution to be the cause. The injured person is under medical care, and further investigation is underway.”
The deceased bodies have been shifted to the mortuary for PME, while police have registered a case and launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the local community, which was preparing for the grand Ganesh festivities. Residents expressed shock and grief, calling for greater safety measures during idol transportation, particularly in areas with overhead power lines.
With Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations set to begin soon, officials are urging organizers across the city to exercise caution while transporting large idols to avoid similar tragedies.
This tragic mishap serves as a somber reminder of the need for strict adherence to safety protocols during religious festivities.
