This River Flows Through More Countries Than Any Other in the World-Guess Which One?

The Danube is the most international river, flowing through the most countries, including the international flow of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. It flows 2,850 km from the Black Forest in Germany to the Black Sea eastward. It is the second longest river in Europe; nevertheless its importance to international significance cannot be surpassed. 

Along its course, it has influenced landscapes and cultures. The Danube is remarkable, since it is the only river worldwide that runs through four national capitals: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. The Danube impacted generations with its significance.

 Through the centuries, it has and still serves as a natural boundary, a trade route, and cultural lifeblood between regions, cities and towns that depend on these same waters and its particulars.

The Danube also drains an even larger basin covering nine other countries. This trans-national, even trans-continental make-up of the river means countries cooperate dozens of times to come to a consensus on how and how much of the water to manage and allocate.It’s also a valuable reminder of nature’s vastness and the shared responsibility of the international management of water systems. 

Although the Danube is a river, it is much more than that: it is a bridge to the people with their histories and civilizations across and in-between places, times and cultures.
