Oracle, the major Cloud computing company, has reportedly initiated a large round of layoffs affecting thousands of employees worldwide as part of efforts to cut costs, according to a report by CNBC. Employees began receiving termination notifications on Tuesday, Business Insider reported.

While the full scale of the layoffs has not been officially confirmed, several reports suggest the total number of affected employees could range between 20,000 and 30,000 globally.

How Many Employees Has Oracle Laid Off In India?

India has been significantly impacted by the restructuring exercise. Reports indicate that around 12,000 employees in India have already been laid off.

According to a report by PTI, citing people affected by the retrenchment, Oracle is also planning another round of layoffs within a month.

The company currently employs approximately 30,000 people in India, including those affected by the latest layoffs.

Why Is Oracle Laying Off Employees?

According to an email sent to employees and reviewed by Business Insider, the company informed staff that their positions had been eliminated due to organisational changes.

The email reportedly stated, “Today is your last working day.”

The message further acknowledged the employees’ contributions during their time at the company.

“We are grateful for your dedication, hard work, and the impact you have made during your time with us,” the company wrote.

In another communication sent to employees, Oracle explained that the layoffs were part of a restructuring exercise aimed at streamlining operations.

The email reportedly stated, “Employees were informed about certain organisational changes and because of these changes, a decision has been taken to streamline the operations, and as a result, unfortunately, the position you currently hold will become redundant.”

 Oracle Severance Package

Documents reviewed by Business Insider indicate that employees laid off in the United States will receive severance pay structured as follows:

Four weeks of base salary, plus one additional week of severance for each year of employment

However, the total severance payout will be capped at 26 weeks.

Oracle also informed affected employees that they would be eligible for severance packages “subject to the terms and conditions of the severance plan.”

Social Media Reacts To Oracle Layoffs

The layoffs have triggered strong reactions on social media, with some users describing the process as abrupt and impersonal.

One user on X wrote, “Imagine waking up to a 6 AM email from ‘Oracle Leadership’ and finding out before your first coffee that your career there is over. No call. No manager conversation. Just locked out of your systems and a DocuSign for severance.
30,000 people, Today💔.”

Another user on the platform, who claimed to be among those affected, reflected on their experience at the company.

“Today, I was impacted by Oracle’s layoffs.

It’s a strange feeling, but I’m incredibly proud of what I was able to build over the past 4 years, from intern to full-time and through my work in the developer community, and grateful for the experience, mentors, and teammates along the way.”
