At least 42 people, including three police officers, were injured—10 of them critically—after an explosion at a chemical factory sparked a massive fire that tore through an industrial unit in Sector 24 of Haryana’s Faridabad on Monday evening, officials said.

Police said the fire started around 4:15 pm at Kalkaji Lubricants, a chemical factory in the Mujesar industrial area, when sparks from a short circuit ignited drums filled with chemicals, causing an explosion.

According to police officials, the incident occurred at Kalkaji Lubricants, a chemical factory in the Mujesar industrial area. Employees were working at the time when a chemical drum suddenly exploded inside the premises. This initial blast was followed by a series of explosions from other drums stored at the site, intensifying the fire.

The fire rapidly consumed the entire factory complex and extended to the nearby road, igniting several parked vehicles. Dense smoke and repeated explosions caused widespread panic as employees rushed to escape to safety.

Several fire tenders were deployed at the site.

“Situation is now under control. A police team has been deployed and an investigation is underway. Preliminary findings suggest a short circuit, and due to the presence of chemicals the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the factory within minutes,” public relations officer of the Faridabad police Yashpal Yadav said.

Faridabad Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Jayant Ahuja stated that hospital authorities had deployed all available medical personnel. Firefighting operations commenced shortly after the incident was reported. Initially, two fire tenders were sent to the site, but due to the severity of the blaze and repeated explosions from chemical-filled drums, 10 additional fire engines were deployed. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control.

As a precaution, authorities evacuated nearby areas because of the threat posed by exploding drums stored both inside and outside the factory premises. After prolonged efforts, the fire department successfully contained the blaze. The exact cause of the initial explosion has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.
