Why Is Delhi Facing Extreme Heatwave Conditions?

According to meteorologists, hot winds blowing from Rajasthan and other desert areas, along with clear skies and extremely low moisture content in the atmosphere, are worsening severe heat wave conditions prevailing in the Delhi NCR region. Such hot and dry winds keep increasing daily temperatures up to abnormal limits; on the other hand, clear sky and strong sunlight make the weather conditions extremely hard for the residents of the national capital region. Furthermore, according to weather experts, lower humidity makes the process of cooling extremely difficult in the atmosphere, which increases the severity of daily heat during the day and night in some parts of Delhi NCR. Heat wave circulation over northern India makes weather conditions worse as well as keeps temperature levels rising abnormally in Delhi NCR region. As a result of such weather effects, severe heat wave conditions are likely to be witnessed in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, and other regions around Delhi NCR until pre-monsoon activity starts in northern India.

How Is Rising Heat Affecting AQI Across Delhi NCR?

According to the weather experts this heatwave like condition and dry winds are the reason the dust particles are trapping closer to the surface and causing the AQI of Delhi NCR to go up and causing trouble for the people.

AQI Factor Impact
Dry Winds Carry dust particles into NCR
Lack of Rainfall Pollutants remain trapped
Extreme Heat Increases ozone formation
Vehicle Pollution Worsens city air quality
Construction Dust Raises particulate matter levels

Health experts have warned the citizens to not go outside during noon time because a long exposure to the sun will cause dehydration and because of a bad AQI it can also cause them some breathing issue.

How Will Delhi Weather Impact Daily Life?

As far as the current harsh heatwave over Delhi NCR, it is having a considerable impact on the day-to-day activities of the residents since the excessively high temperatures are making it tough for them to venture outside. It is expected that the road traffic will experience extremely harsh weather conditions as the heat and wind become unbearable in the afternoons, with some places being affected by heat haze due to the high temperatures. According to weather experts, extended exposure to extremely high temperatures can lead to conditions like dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke among outdoor workers, delivery agents, traffic police officers, and construction workers. The increased temperatures have caused an unprecedented surge in power consumption as the appliances such as ACs and fans keep running to keep people cool throughout the heatwave period. Residents have been advised to drink plenty of water, refrain from venturing out during peak afternoons, dress lightly, and spend their time indoors whenever possible.

According to meteorologists, Delhi NCR may witness severe heatwave conditions, high AQI readings, dry air currents, and higher temperatures in the evenings in the next few days due to continued heatwave circulation in northern India. Experts say that dry and northwesterly winds blowing from Rajasthan and its surrounding deserts have been causing temperatures to rise far beyond average values in areas like Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. Lately, the lack of cloud formation along with dry atmospheric conditions has further led to intense heat during the daytime and reduced chances of any respite during the evening. Worsening air quality and high temperature conditions might cause health hazards due to dehydration and difficulty breathing in afternoons. Meteorologists think that isolated pre-monsoon weather patterns and formation of clouds and gusts of wind may start emerging in late May as weather systems become stronger in northern India.
