India has done it again! The dream is real — India are world champions on home soil! Yes, under the blazing lights of a packed Narendra Modi Stadium, the Indian cricket team defeated New Zealand to win the T20 World Cup 2026 final match on Sunday.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led side delivered a performance for the ages and dominated the game throughout the game with their all-around performance. Repaying the faith of a billion expectations, the Men in Blue scripted history as they became the first nation to defend the title of the T20 World Cup.
Apart from this, with this win, the Indian cricket team broke several records and has etched its name in the history books forever.
Talking about the match, the Men in Blue produced a commanding performance to defeat New Zealand, all thanks to the impressive bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel and a stunning innings earlier from Sanju Samson.
After New Zealand chose to bowl first, India began cautiously before Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson switched gears. India raced to 92/0 in the powerplay, matching the joint highest powerplay total in T20 World Cup history.
Abhishek smashed a rapid 52 off 18 balls before being dismissed by Rachin Ravindra. Samson then took charge and stitched together a destructive partnership with Ishan Kishan. Samson scored 89 off 46 balls while Kishan hammered 54 off 25 as India crossed 200 in the 15th over.
Sanju Samson played a stunning knock, yet again, and proved himself on the biggest stage. He registered 46 balls 89 while Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan added quick fifties to help India pile up 255/5. This was the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final.
New Zealand cricket team, on the other hand, struggled throughout in the chase and were eventually bowled out for just 159 runs. Jasprit Bumrah starred with figures of 4/15, and Axar chipped in with 3/27 as India sealed a massive 96-run victory.
Tim Seifert fought back with a quick 52, but wickets kept falling at the other end. Bumrah returned to pick up three more wickets and finish with 4/15.
New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159 in the 19th over, handing India a historic 96-run win and the T20 World Cup 2026 crown.
India 255/5 in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 89, Ishan Kishan 54, Abhishek Sharma 52; James Neesham 3/46) beat New Zealand 159/10 in 19 overs (Tim Seifert 52; Jasprit Bumrah 4/15; Axar Patel 3/27) by 96 runs.
