Former Himachal Pradesh Congress chairman Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu is set to be the state’s next chief minister, with the party’s national leadership having approved his nomination.
According to sources, the party’s national leadership has accepted Sukhu’s appointment as the new Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Sources stated “After discussing it with other leaders his name will be released by this evening.”
The decision came a day after freshly elected Congress MLAs endorsed a resolution authorising the Congress high leadership to choose the parliamentary party’s next leader.
According to reports, Vikramaditya Singh, son of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, would be given significant responsibilities in the cabinet.
They said that Sukhu’s name was chosen following discussions with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who spoke with members of the Gandhi family.
Himachal Pradesh’s assembly elections were won by the Congress party, who gained 40 seats. The BJP received 25 seats.
Sukhu is a Nadaun MLA who has held many organisational positions in the hill state.
