On Tuesday morning, Google Search went down for thousands of users around the world in what turned out to be a rare and unexpected outage. For most people, Google going down is almost unimaginable. It’s the kind of thing you just don’t expect to happen. But it did, and for a short while, one of the world’s most-used websites simply stopped working. The good news? Google was back up and running fairly quickly, and things returned to normal before long.
When users tried to search for something, they were met with an unusual error message instead of the familiar search results page. The screen read: “Server Error. We’re sorry, but it appears that there has been an internal server error while processing your request. It went on to say that Google’s engineers had been notified and were already working to fix the problem, asking users to try again later.
For many people, this was genuinely confusing. Some even wondered if something was wrong with their own internet connection before realising it was Google itself that was down. Screenshots of the error message quickly started flooding social media, especially X (formerly Twitter). Users expressed surprise, with many saying they had never seen Google go down like this before. One user simply posted “Is Google Down?” along with a screenshot.
The tech giant has not yet released an official statement explaining what caused the outage. The error message itself pointed to an internal server error, which suggests something went wrong on Google’s end rather than with users’ devices or internet connections. Google confirmed that its engineers were on the case and working to resolve it.
Currently the web browser is working again as usual, and the engineers of the company have resolved the issue. However, they have not clarified the issue behind this technical glitch.
