Iran Turkey Attack: Iran, which is simultaneously fighting with multiple countries in a war started by Israel and United States, has reportedly fired long-range missiles on Turkey on Wednesday.
The attack has evoked sharp reaction from Turkey as well the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
While Turkey’s foreign minister conveyed to his protest to Iranian counterpart, NATO said that it stands with all its allies in the wake of Iran’s indiscriminate attacks in the region.
In the phone call, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urged his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions further, according to a source.
The missile was detected over the air space of Syria and Iraq before being destroyed by the NATO’s air defense system, a report stated.
The ministry said in a statement that no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. It added that Turkey reserves the right to respond to any hostile acts against it and urged all parties to avoid actions that could further escalate the conflict.
Turkey, a predominantly Sunni Muslim country and a member of NATO, shares a roughly 500-kilometre border with Iran.
Five days into the conflict – one that U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated could last several weeks or longer – the death toll in Iran has climbed to nearly 800.
The United States and Israel carried out coordinated strikes on Iran on Saturday, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The conflict rapidly escalated as Tehran launched retaliatory attacks on Gulf countries hosting US military bases, while Israel struck targets in Lebanon linked to the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
