Farmers protesting near the Delhi-UP border in Ghazipur were detained by Delhi Police. The farmers had called for a ‘Mahapanchayat’ at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for which many farmers had started arriving in the city.
At the Delhi-Haryana border, the police have increased security, placed barricades, and dispatched officers.
The Delhi-Ghazipur border near Delhi witnessed a 3-km long traffic jam as commuters headed for Delhi were stuck due to the barricading. Additionally, security has been stepped up at the Delhi border crossings at Singhu and Tikri, where farmers were coming from outside of the city.
While there are extensive security arrangements at the Jantar Mantar, Section 144 has been implemented throughout the New Delhi region. To prevent farmers from using certain roads, concrete slabs have been installed in various locations.
Farmers from several states will attend a “mahapanchayat” called for by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Apolitical) on Monday at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. However, Delhi Police claimed that permission for the protest had been denied.
Farmers have called on the Mahapanchayat to seek justice for the relatives of the victims in Lakhimpur Kheri and the release of farmers from prison.
