Since a fire broke out on June 3 in the neighbourhood, dense plumes of smoke have been rising from the Bhalswa waste site.

The landfill caught fire again on Friday afternoon, and the fire department, which received a report about the incident at 1:52 p.m., dispatched fire tenders to the scene and managed to put the blaze out by 8:20 p.m., according to the fire department. After a fire broke out on April 26 and firemen worked to put out the flames for six days, dense clouds of smoke continued to rise from the scene.

Residents near the Bhalswa dump yard in the national capital have complained of respiratory issues and requested a permanent solution to the periodic flames, which sometimes last for days at a time.

People who live near the yard claim that during fires, smoke penetrates their rooms, causing them health problems.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai attended the waste site in north Delhi last Thursday to check the status before the fire. To prevent similar fires, he claimed, a nine-point action plan was being devised.
