The government program requires all people in the country to receive emergency alerts through their mobile phones together with a distinctive sound and vibration. The test, which will occur on Saturday, aims to evaluate the emergency performance of the Cell Broadcast Alert System.

The Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority work together to run mobile alert drills, which enable them to enhance disaster response communication systems throughout India.

Emergency Alert Today: Why You Got Emergency Test Alert on Phones

The Department of Telecommunications conducts testing of the Cell Broadcast (CB) alert system in order to evaluate its operational performance before they launch the system nationwide.

During this testing period, people may receive “test messages” on their phones in English, Hindi, and other regional languages if Cell Broadcast alerts are enabled. The system will send multiple alerts to you because this process tests system performance across various mobile networks.

The test reportedly covered Delhi-NCR and the capital cities of all states and Union Territories, excluding border areas and poll-bound states, according to a report by The Hindu.

The alert titles ‘Extremely Severe Alerts’ was sent by NDMA. It read, “India, launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology, for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message. – Government of India.

Emergency Alert on May 2: Why Government Conduct Nationalwide Emergency Alert Drill on Phones?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) executes this project through its partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) which operates under the Ministry of Communications. The alert system operates through SACHET, which the Centre for Development of Telematics has created as its foundation.

The existing system undergoes testing because multiple government agencies maintain their collaboration to achieve efficient emergency alert distribution.

Emergency Alert on Phone Today: How the Emergency Alert System Work?

The Centre for Development of Telematics developed this system which operates through SACHET to deliver emergency alerts to all mobile devices that are present in a designated area. The system uses silent mode and do-not-disturb settings to ensure that people will receive essential notifications.

Test messages only go to phones which have enabled Cell Broadcast test alerts. Users can enable or disable them by going to Settings → Safety and Emergency → Wireless Emergency Alerts → Test Alerts on their devices.

The upcoming days will see people receiving multiple test messages which are part of the trial. The testing process ensures that system testing works properly across different mobile networks.
