Shock in Bengal: RN Ravi to Replace CV Ananda Bose, Leaves Mamata Didi Unimpressed

In a shocking twist, RN Ravi, currently Tamil Nadu’s Goveor, is slated to take over as West Bengal’s top constitutional head, replacing CV Ananda Bose. Bose resigned on March 5, 2026, handing his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi-just ahead of crucial assembly elections. Political corridors are abuzz as observers wonder how Ravi’s arrival will shift the balance. Mamata Banerjee, visibly unimpressed by the “unilateral” decision, has already voiced her conces, signaling sparks ahead. Bengal’s goveor shuffle is more than a routine change-it’s a drama that could rattle the state’s political chessboard.

Who Is RN Ravi? Bengal’s New Governor With A Reputation For Drama

RN Ravi, whose full name is Ravindra Narayana Ravi, has maintained a presence in political circles and media coverage throughout his career. Ravi, a retired IPS officer who joined the Kerala police force in 1976, worked for the Intelligence Bureau for twenty years before reaching the position of Special Director and later becoming Deputy National Security Advisor. The government appointed him as the main representative in the Naga peace negotiations, where he helped develop the 2015 Naga Framework Agreement.

RN Ravi began his path toward gubernatorial politics through several significant postings. He served as Governor in Nagaland while also taking on responsibilities in Meghalaya before guiding Tamil Nadu through constitutional governance until his recent move to West Bengal. His work during these positions brought him public attention through legislative disputes, walkouts during speeches, and various cultural disagreements. He created a political crisis in Tamil Nadu when he refused to read prepared government speeches that included references to “Dravidian model” leaders, while also proposing to change the state’s name from “Tamil Nadu” to “Tamizhagam.”

RN Ravi begins his new role as West Bengal Governor on March 5, 2026, just before the upcoming assembly elections. Mamata Banerjee expressed displeasure, accusing the other party of making decisions that undermine West Bengal’s dignity. Bengal’s political environment now features two opposing forces, determining whether RN Ravi will govern smoothly or face challenges. True to form, he operates openly and decisively in all situations.

Mamata Banerjee Slams RN Ravi’s Appointment as ‘Unilateral’

Mamata Banerjee reacted strongly to the news of RN Ravi’s appointment as West Bengal Governor, calling it a “unilateral” decision that undermines the dignity of the state. She stated that she was not consulted prior to the move and described the Centre’s actions as eroding democratic conventions. Banerjee expressed that Bose’s resignation, along with similar resignations in other states like Ladakh, appeared to be part of a broader political reshuffle ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

In her first statement, Banerjee said she was “shocked and deeply concerned” and suggested that political pressures may have influenced Bose’s resignation. On X (formerly Twitter), she elaborated that the Union Home Minister had informed her of Ravi’s appointment without following established conventions, which she said struck at the very foundation of India’s federal structure. Banerjee urged the Centre to respect cooperative federalism and avoid unilateral decisions that could weaken democratic principles, emphasizing that such actions disrupt trust between the Union and the states.

“The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States,” she added, leaving readers wondering what’s next in Bengal’s political drama.
