London [UK], January 9: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh touched down in the United Kingdom on Monday night for a crucial visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. This visit is significant as it marks the first time a sitting Indian Defence Minister has visited the UK in 23 years.

During his stay, Minister Singh is scheduled to engage in discussions with his British counterpart, Secretary of State for Defence Grant Shapps, addressing a spectrum of bilateral issues. A high-level delegation from the Ministry of Defence, including officials from DRDO, Service Headquarters, the Department of Defence, and the Department of Defence Production, will accompany him.

The agenda for the discussions includes a wide range of topics, encompassing defence, security, and industrial cooperation. Minister Singh is also slated to meet UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and hold a meeting with Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Cameron.

In addition to official talks, Rajnath Singh is set to interact with CEOs and industry leaders from the UK defence sector. Furthermore, he plans to engage with the Indian community in the UK during his visit.

The timing of the visit is crucial as India and the UK are actively negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Talks commenced in 2022, with the 12th round taking place from August 8-31, emphasizing the commitment of both nations to foster economic collaboration.

The visit builds upon the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, launched in 2021, and aligns with the India-UK Roadmap 2030, illustrating the shared commitment to a partnership that benefits both countries.
