Cristiano Ronaldo is once again in the spotlight as the world of football prepares for the grand kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 11. The Portuguese talisman is not just playing, at the age of 41, he is on the verge of rewriting international football history. The iconic striker, officially named Portugal’s captain for the forthcoming tournament, is set to break milestones that have stood the test of modern football.

One of the most historic of these feats is an elite leadership record. And when Ronaldo leads the Seleção out for their opening group fixture, he will go down in the record books as being only the second player in the history of the sport to captain his country at five different FIFA World Cups. The iconic forward had previously worn the armband for Portugal in the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.

Mexican defensive maestro Rafael Marquez was the only player in this category until now. Márquez became Mexico’s captain in 2002, and was the team’s leader for five consecutive tournaments — 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018. His last game as captain was as a key substitute in a famous 1-0 win over Germany in 2018. Márquez also netted three goals in his 19 games at the tournament.

Already the top scorer in international football with an unprecedented 143 goals, Ronaldo will be looking to vastly improve his stellar World Cup résumé. He made his tournament debut 20 years ago to the day in 2006, anchoring Portugal to a respectable fourth-place finish. Since then he has made 22 World Cup appearances, the most for his country in tournament history.

But the most attractive targets are the goal-scoring tables. Ronaldo has now scored eight World Cup goals and is second on Portugal’s all-time tournament scoring list. The legendary Eusébio takes the top spot, famously netting nine. And if Ronaldo scores at least twice in the 2026 tournament, he will overtake “The Black Panther” to become Portugal’s undisputed top World Cup scorer.

Moreover, one goal in North America will achieve an unprecedented milestone worldwide. Ronaldo has scored in his last five World Cup appearances and has a golden chance of becoming the first footballer to score in six different editions of the tournament. For a player known for his longevity, the 2026 World Cup is the ideal setting for one final legendary chapter.

Key Records Cristiano Ronaldo Can Break at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

  • Five-Time Captain: He will become only the second player in football history to captain his country at five different FIFA World Cups, joining Mexican legend Rafael Márquez.

  • Six-Tournament Goalscorer: By finding the back of the net just once, he will become the first player ever to score in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup.

  • Portugal’s Top World Cup Scorer: With eight tournament goals currently, scoring twice in 2026 will allow him to overtake Eusébio (9 goals) as Portugal’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history.

  • Extending the All-Time International Record: Every goal scored will extend his own world record for the most international goals in men’s football history, which currently stands at 143.
