Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday that possible peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin could be hosted in Turkey, the Gulf States, or European countries. Zelenskiy has long pushed for direct talks with Putin to end the war, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said no agenda has been set for such a meeting.

In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy said Ukraine is preparing as much as possible to make peace talks happen. “This week there will be contacts with Turkey, with Gulf States, and with European countries that could host talks with Russia,” he said. “From our side, everything will be prepared to the maximum in order to end the war.”

Peace Talks With Russia and Diplomacy

At the same time, Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, and the head of Ukraine’s national security council were in Qatar to meet with the country’s defense minister. This underlined Kyiv’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to seek support abroad.

Zelenskiy also stressed that any talks with Russia must be closely coordinated with Ukraine’s international partners, especially the United States. He said he had already discussed the matter in Kyiv with U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg. “Everything further depends on the will of world leaders, above all the United States, to put pressure on Russia,” he said. According to Zelenskiy, Russia is avoiding “real negotiations,” and only strong sanctions and tariffs can push Moscow toward serious talks.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov Criticised Western Nations

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Western countries of deliberately trying to block peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, but claimed their attempts would fail. Lavrov added that President Vladimir Putin had called the Alaska summit on August 15 “fruitful” and said it was time to “turn the page” and restart cooperation. Follow-up meetings in Washington on August 19 focused on the summit’s outcomes, Trump’s talks with Zelenskiy and European leaders, and possible post-war security guarantees for Ukraine.

In an interview, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had criticised President Volodymyr Zelensky for trying to “shift attention” away from Ukraine’s internal problems, especially issues related to the Russian language and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Lavrov claimed that Ukrainian laws have effectively banned the Russian language and restricted the canonical Church, calling these actions “serious violations of the UN Charter.”

He argued that the first step toward resolving the conflict should be the cancellation of these laws, no matter what Zelensky’s position may be.
