During the country’s ongoing uprisings over the death of Mahsa Amini, Iran’s nuclear energy agency on Sunday claimed that hackers are acting on behalf of foreign nation who now has the access to email server of one of its subsidiaries .
According to the Anadolu Agency, Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) confirmed that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant’s email server was the target of a cyberattack from “a particular foreign country. The energy agency authorities stated that “it is noteworthy to content of (hacked users’) emails carried technical messages and normal, daily interactions.”
The first nuclear power station in Iran, Bushehr, is located near Persian Gulf and was constructed in 2011 utilising Russian technology.
Iran has been engulfed in nationwide protests for weeks following the death of Amini, who was detained by the government’s morality police for not wearing her hijab properly. Following her death during detention, authorities and protesters engaged in violent battles which left hundreds of people dead.
In support of current demonstrations in Iran over the death of Amini, a hacking collective from Iran named “Black Reward” recently made an announcement on Twitter that it had compromised data pertaining to Iran’s nuclear activity at the Bushehr plant.
The group claimed that it also leaked “management and operational schedules of different parts of Bushehr power plant, reported Anadolu Agency,” in addition to information regarding the visas of Iranian and Russian nuclear experts working for the nuclear energy agency.
In the country’s Kurdish region, there have been numerous protests and strikes since Amini’s passing on September 16.
Initial popular outrage over Amini’s passing and Iran’s long-standing requirement that women wear headscarves in public rapidly turned into calls for more liberties and the overthrow of Iran’s Islamist leaders.
