Commercial vehicle unions across Delhi-NCR have announced a strike from May 21 to May 23 with reports of more than 68 unions joining the agitation. The drivers are demanding fare revision, saying the operating economics have become difficult after repeated hikes in petrol, diesel and CNG prices.

This may lead to an increase in waiting time, congestion in other modes of transport and possible problems in the availability of cabs and autos for commuters.

What Do Market Experts Say About Rising Petrol Prices?

Analysts suggest that the repeated rises in fuel costs are turning into a wider business risk – primarily for transport, infrastructure and fuel-dependent businesses.

“Recurrent increases in fuel prices have a broad-based impact across sectors, particularly in infrastructure and other fuel-intensive industries, materially affecting both commercial arrangements and operational performance. Sustained escalation in fuel costs may render existing contractual arrangements commercially impracticable or economically unsustainable,” said Poonam Verma Sengupta, Partner, JSA Advocates & Solicitors.

She added that sectors such as aviation, transport, manufacturing, FMCG and construction could face higher costs, margin pressure and contract renegotiations if fuel prices continue rising.
