Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has granted interim bail to Umar Khalid. The court has granted him interim bail from December 16 to December 29. Khalid had approached the trial court seeking interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding on December 27.

Khalid had requested interim bail to be granted by the Karkardooma Court between December 14 and December 29 by claiming that his sister had planned to be married on December 27 and that his presence was inevitable in relatives doing a lot of ceremonies and preparations.

The judge had granted Khalid interim bail to attend a wedding in the family of the family in December last year, although this was only 7 days. In 2022, earlier, he was also given interim bail to spend up to a week with his sister to meet the marriage ceremony.

Since September 2020, he has been in custody regarding a supposed conspiracy involving the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots and he has rejected the charges.

In its order, the court stated that it was taking into consideration the fact that the marriage is that of the real sister of the applicant. In the process of providing interim relief, it came with a number of conditions.

Khalid is forbidden to communicate with witnesses and any other person related to the case and should give his mobile number to the investigating officer and maintain it during the bail time.

The court also ordered that Khalid should not be on the social media during the interim bail and only interact with his family members, relatives and friends. He must stay at his home or at the places where the marriage ceremonies, as he states, are going to be held.

The order requires that Khalid has to turn himself in in the presence of the Superintendent of the jail in question on the evening of December 29 upon the expiry of the interim bail period. The Superintendent shall then make a compliance report to the court.

The Supreme Court reserved its ruling on bail pleads of activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam among others in the UAPA case over the supposed conspiracy in the February 2020 riots in Delhi a day earlier.

Violently against the bail requests of activists Umar, Sharjeel and others, the Delhi Police had asserted that the February 2020 riots were not an incident, but a premeditated, planned and organized attack on the sovereignty of India.
