In the aftermath of fire incident at the Assam-Meghalaya border, tensions remained high in Meghalaya and Assam on Thursday. Only automobiles registered in Meghalaya were permitted to enter the state.
As previously reported, tensions rose in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong after miscreants set fire to a traffic booth and assaulted three police cars, including a city bus, on Thursday evening.
The event occurred on November 22 at a candlelight vigil organised by various parties to condemn the violence on Assam-Meghalaya border. Six people were murdered in a shooting incident in the Mukroh region of Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district, comprising five Meghalaya residents and a Assam Forest Guard troops.
According to reports, demonstrators threw stones and petrol bombs at police personnel stationed to settle tensions.
Security forces were obliged to blast tear gas rounds to disperse the demonstrators and impose order, say reports.
S. Nongtnger, SP of East Khasi Hills, Shillong, stated that the incident destroyed three police vehicles, including a city bus and a gypsy.
“The miscreants set fire to a city traffic booth and threw petrol bombs at police officers,” SP stated.
Earlier on Wednesday, governments of Assam and Meghalaya urged that the event be investigated by a federal body.
