IPL Broadcast Engineer Found Dead in Mumbai Hotel Room, Mystery Deepens as Police Launch Probe

A British national who was working as a broadcast engineer for the BCCI during the IPL was reportedly found dead in his hotel room at Mumbai’s Trident Hotel. He has been identified as Williams Langford, a British citizen. 

Langford had been staying at the hotel since March 24. He had returned to his room (No. 2715) on March 29. The following day, March 30, when the receptionist tried calling his room, there was no response.

Later, the hotel staff who entered the room using a master key, discovered him lying on the floor. The hotel’s in-house doctor pronounced him dead later. The Marine Drive Police Station has registered an accidental death report and further investigation is underway. Officials said a postmortem examination has been conducted, and the exact cause of death will be determined after the report is received.

“Nothing suspicious has been found so far,” police said, adding that the case is being treated as an unnatural death pending further investigation.

Past Incident

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was found unconscious in his hotel room and was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a hospital in Kingston on the morning of March 18, 2007. He was 58.

In the days that followed, the incident drew intense media attention after police initially suggested he had been strangled, turning the case into a major investigation. The 2007 Cricket World Cup, being held in the West Indies, was suddenly overshadowed by the unfolding mystery.

Woolmer, widely regarded as one of the most innovative coaches in cricket, had been staying at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica, when he was found unresponsive. Just hours earlier, Pakistan had suffered a shocking defeat to Ireland—one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

The loss meant Ireland, then a non-Test playing nation, advanced to the next stage, while the 1992 champions Pakistan were eliminated from the tournament.

Back in Pakistan, the defeat sparked widespread anger, with protests breaking out and effigies of Woolmer and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq burned in cities like Multan. However, the outrage soon turned into shock and grief as news of Woolmer’s sudden death spread.
