Maruti Ignis
Indian automotive manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has discontinued its popular budget friendly car the Ignis in India. This decision comes after a decline in sales and low demand. The car comes at an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.35 lakh to Rs 7.55 lakh. The Ignis was sold via NEXA premium retailer network. The media reports suggest that the company is gearing up for a new small SUV which will rival Tata Punch and possibly replace the Ignis in the near term.
The sources confirmed that the company has paused the production of the Ignis and that the car has been discontinued. It has been over a month since production officially stopped. The authorised dealers of the brand have stopped accepting the booking of the car. However, the company has not announced it officially yet, and the model is still listed on the official NEXA website.
The company introduced the Ignis in India in early 2017 and it even got a facelift in 2020 which brought notable design updates to the tallboy hatchback. The facelift variant was available in three models: Delta, Zeta, and Alpha. There was also a Sigma variant which was discontinued over time.
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis was full of features, the car used to feature a 7-inch “Smart Play” touch screen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, six speaker audio, climate control, electric adjustment for ORVM and push-button start on the higher trims. Aircraft-styled ‘toggle type’ switches were a key highlight of the design.
The safety features of the car were also quite decent; the car used to come with ABS, EBD, ISOFIX mount and airbags.
The Maruti hatchback used to be underpinned by the lightweight 5th generation Heartect platform, and it was powered by a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol engine generating 83hp and 113 Nm of peak torque. This block did not have the “Dualjet technology”. The company used to offer two transmission options: a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT automatic (AGS, as Suzuki calls it).
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis was a fun to drive vehicle offering good fuel efficiency and it was highly appreciated for its visual appeal. It had a polarising design. The last version that was on sale used to come in seven colour options.
The company has rolled out multiple cosmetic updates and special editions such as Radiance and Black on the Ignis, which may have been clearing the inventory as per media reports.
The company is working on a B-segment SUV which is expected to launch in late 2026 or early 2027. The upcoming car is currently codenamed Y43, the production form of this SUV will compete with cars such as the Hyundai Exter and the Tata Punch. Currently, the Tata Punch has a strong hold in this segment and will thus be its strongest opponent.
The company used Ignis to compete with Punch. The Y43 production form will thus take the place of the now-discontinued Ignis. The upcoming replacement of the Ignis is expected to be powered with a 1.2L petrol engine, likely Dualjet equipped, and well sit below the Brezza in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio and it will also likely be sold through NEXA dealership.
