OpenAI has paused the development of ChatGPT’s proposed “adult mode” indefinitely, stepping back from plans to allow explicit conversations on the platform. The move comes amid growing concerns over user safety, misuse risks and the company’s shift in focus towards core products and enterprise growth.
The feature, first announced by CEO Sam Altman last year, was designed to allow sexually explicit conversations between ChatGPT and verified adult users.
It was expected to include strict safeguards such as age verification to prevent minors from accessing such content. However, the idea quickly ran into resistance internally and from experts over the risks it could pose.
OpenAI’s decision is driven by multiple concerns:
–User safety risks: Experts warned the feature could lead to unhealthy emotional dependence and compulsive use of AI
–Child protection issues: There were fears that age verification systems may not fully prevent minors from accessing explicit content
–Lack of research: The company acknowledged it needs more long-term data on how such interactions impact users
The company’s advisory groups had flagged that such features could blur emotional boundaries between humans and AI. Due to these concerns, the feature, already delayed earlier, has now been shelved for the foreseeable future.
The pause also reflects a broader strategic shift inside OpenAI. The company is now focusing on-
-Strengthening core products like ChatGPT and coding tools
-Expanding enterprise offerings
-Attracting private equity investment
Reports suggest OpenAI is prioritising revenue-driven products and reducing “side projects” to stay competitive in the AI race.
It is also working on a larger “super-app” that could combine multiple AI tools under one platform.
The decision comes amid a wider debate around how far AI should go in handling sensitive or explicit content.
While some argue adult users should have more freedom, others warn about:
-Mental health risks
-Misuse of AI for harmful content
-Ethical and regulatory challenges.
