A Day for Dogs – Nepal Festival Worships Canines

Dogs sure made their way into the hearts of the Nepal’s populous, as they celebrate worship their four-legged friends.

Dogs, who are regarded as man’s greatest friend, have a special place in Nepal where each dog has their own day. Literally!

People in the Himalayan nation gathered on the second day of the five-day Tihar holiday, which started earlier this week. They were there to worship their canine companions.

People give prayers and honour dogs—both domestic and stray animals—during Kukur Tihar. The dogs receive garlands, tikkas on their foreheads, and copious amounts of food.

The Kukur Tihar holiday is widely observed across Nepal with great fervour, with young children lavishing attention on dogs and providing them with an abundance of food items like milk, eggs, etc.

Like every year, Kukur Tihar fell on October 24 this year, and people in Nepal enthusiastically observed the holiday.

Not just locals but travellers from all around the world took part in the celebrations.

The Hindu holiday of Kukur Tihar is associated with the conviction that dogs are Yamaraj, the deity of death messengers. ,’s During these days, people worship man’s most devoted companion in an effort to please Yamaraj.

In many homes, dogs are even considered family members. The closeness between people and dogs is indescribable in words and can only be experienced firsthand if you have a dog as a pet.

On the second day of Yama Panchak, also known as Tihar, dogs are honoured for the role they serve in Nepal by being worshipped early in the morning for their dedication and honesty.

In various areas of the world, Tihar is also referred to as Deepavali, the festival of light. People participate in rituals, decorate their homes with diyas, rangoli, ornaments, and lights, feast on delectable sweets and meals, don new traditional attire, and pray to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, for guidance in choosing the right path and the courage to face all fears during this time.
