As the nation transitioned into its 75th year of Independence, Prime Minister Modi, addressed the country from the Red Fort, New Delhi commemorating the tradition of hoisting the National Flag. Here is a detailed insight into his speech.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort by noting that it was a momentous day for India as it embarked on a new direction, a new commitment, with renewed vigour. “In the coming years, we have to focus on ‘Panchpran‘ (five promises) – First, to move forward with bigger resolves and a resolve of developed India; second, erase all traces of servitude; third, be proud of our legacy; fourth, focus on our strength of unity; and fifth, fulfil the duties of citizens with honesty, whimsy, and integrity.”
Ahead of the address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the National Flag during a 21-gun salute from the ATAGS, an indigenously produced howitzer gun, a first for the nation.
The address began by declaring that it’s a momentous day as the nation takes a new path, a new pledge with new vigor.
He also acknowledged women freedom warriors, saying that every Indian is filled with pride when they remember the energy of India’s women, like as Rani Laxmibai, Jhalkari Bai, Chennamma, and Begun Hazrat Maha.
He also emphasised the critical role of India’s indigenous minority. This is particularly fascinating given that the current elected president, Draupadi Murmu, is also from one.
Interestingly while mentioning the pivotal contribution made by those who fought for independence or created the nation, the PM didn’t shy away from mentioning leaders from the opposition- Dr Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel, SP Mookerjee, and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
As he dived further into his speech, he took a swipe at the opposition by stating that the nation has to remove every trace of colonialism and have to resolve to work toward a “Viksit Bharat” (developed nation). He also added that the nation has to get rid of dynasty politics as the nation is under the shackles of the same along with corruption. “As corruption is like a termite and we have to resolve to resist it. We must promote awareness of “Parivaarwaad,” (Familialism) in order to recognise the strength of our institutions and move the country forward on the basis of merit,” he said.
Continuing with this speech, he envisaged the plan for the next 25 years, with enumerating five promises (panchpran) for the nation.
“We shall never forget Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji’s expression, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” he said during his speech from the Red Fort, adding to that the “golden term” added to “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” by the late Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. AB Later, Vajpayee added the slogan “Jai Vigyaan” to it. Jai Anusandhan is now a necessity as well (research & innovation). Jai Anusandhan, Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, and Jai Vigyaan.
He also urged the nation to Empower Nari Shakti, “It is critical that we do nothing in our words or actions that diminishes the dignity of women,” remarked Prime Minister Modi.
He also announced the expansion of the Space Mission & Deep Ocean Mission and added that it is the endeavour to provide all possible assistance to the country’s young for research ranging from space to the depths of the ocean, which is the reason for increasing the ‘Deep Ocean Mission and Space Mission’. “The answer to our future can be found in the depths of space and the ocean,” he said.
Continuing his address from the Red Fort, PM Modi said, India is increasingly becoming a manufacturing powerhouse, whether it is for electronic items or mobile phones, and will lead the progress of the world, a Digital India is reaching every village of India and with 5G spectrum entering the Indian market, development is inevitable.
PM Modi remarked that, in addition to cooperative federalism, which is the bedrock of our democracy, we also require cooperative competitive federalism.
