Odisha Train Tragedy: CBI registers FIR in Balasore accident

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case in the triple train accident in Odisha’s Balasore.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case in the triple train accident in Odisha’s Balasore on June 2 that claimed more than 277 passengers’ lives and injured around 1,100 people. A 10-member CBI team reached the site of the accident on Tuesday morning as part of its investigation into the tragedy.

“CBI has registered a case on the request of Ministry of Railways, consent of the Odisha government and further orders from DoPT (Department of Personnel and Training) relating to the train accident involving Coromandel Express, Yashwantpur-Howrah Express and a goods train at Bahanaga Bazar in the state of Odisha on June 2,” Hindustan Times quoted a CBI spokesperson as saying.

According to the FIR, the case has been registered under sections 154, 175 and 153 of the Railway Act and under sections 337, 338, 304 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

The CBI has taken over the investigation of the case registered at Balasore GRPS, district Cuttack (Odisha) vide GRPS Case No 64, reported ANI.

The FIR report also mentioned that at present, the culpability of specific Railway Employees is not ascertained.

The deadly triple train clash that took place in Odisha’s Balasore district resulted in the death of around 275 passengers and injured more than 1,000 people. The threeway accident involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and a goods train.
