The Chinese foreign ministry restated its position on September 13 after declining to comment on the possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the fringes of the SCO summit in Uzbekistan the following week.
Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization regional security bloc conference in Uzbekistan from September 15 to 16. Also attending will be Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and others.
When asked if India and China are in communication over a prospective Modi-Xi meeting outside of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit earlier on September 9, spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Mao Ning said, “I have no information to provide at this moment.”
The SCO is made up of eight countries: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan. Its headquarters are in Beijing.
According to China, the most recent event about the withdrawal statement by both parties in the eastern Ladakh region’s Gogra-Hotsprings area will send a “good signal” to improve the tense bilateral relations.
The Chinese military reported on September 9 that the Indian and Chinese forces had started to disengage from Patrolling Point 15 in the Gogra-Hotsprings region of eastern Ladakh in a “coordinated and planned approach.”
The stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is essential, according to India, for the development of bilateral ties in general. The stalemate at the eastern Ladakh border began on May 5, 2020, following a brutal brawl in the Pangong lake districts.
