Meta collaborates with MCA to launch deepfake fact-checking helpline.

Meta and the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) unveiled plans to introduce a specialized WhatsApp helpline for fact-checking deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation.

Expected to be accessible to the public next month, the helpline aims to detect media produced through artificial intelligence.

Meta emphasizes its commitment to assisting platform users in accessing credible and verified information. Supported by the Misinformation Combat Alliance and a network of independent fact-checkers and research organizations, the initiative will enable users to report deepfakes through a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot, available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Messages submitted by users will undergo scrutiny by fact-checkers, industry partners, and digital labs to authenticate the content and debunk false information.

Meta and the Misinformation Combat Alliance outline a comprehensive strategy focusing on detection, prevention, reporting, and raising awareness about the proliferation of deepfakes. They aim to equip citizens with reliable information to combat the dissemination of misinformation effectively.

While Meta develops the chatbot, the Misinformation Combat Alliance prepares to establish a central ‘deepfake analysis unit’ to manage incoming helpline messages. Meta has collaborated with 11 independent fact-checking organizations to identify, verify, and address misinformation on its platform.

WhatsApp has been a breeding ground for misinformation, leading to Meta’s efforts to address the issue through measures like limiting forwards and tackling fake accounts. Despite these efforts, the company continues to grapple with the challenge of curbing misinformation spread on the platform.
